Long Term Enjoyment of Swimming and
Fitness
Bear Swimming is a year-round program
sanctioned by United States of America (USA) Swimming. Its
purpose is to promote swimming as a life sport, to offer
opportunities that encourage the recreational beginning swimmer,
and to challenge the serious competitive athlete. The team
provides sound swimming technique, self-motivation and personal
development with a focus on long term enjoyment of swimming and
fitness. Competition is a way to develop individual skill,
confidence, self-discipline and team spirit.
History
The Golden
Bear Swim Club was originally formed in 1982 as part of
the
University
of
California
’s recreation
department. The
University affiliation ended in 1993 and Berkeley Bear Swimming was
created as an independent, non-profit swim club. In 2003 our name was changed to
Bear Swimming to reflect the geographic diversity of the
team.
In 2003, Bear
Swimming also established a Pre-Competitive Swim School in order to
offer high quality, learn to swim lessons and to provide an
introduction to the year-round swim team.
Bear Swimming
is a community-based non-profit swim club that continues to
emphasize quality training for ages 4 through collegiate
years.
